Using An Elliptical Trainer For Weight Loss And Fitness

Using An Elliptical Trainer For Weight Loss And Fitness

By Bill Herren

My second favorite form of cardio exercise is using an elliptical trainer (First is mountain biking). Elliptical trainers make your weight loss cardio program quiet, low impact, and challenging.

Elliptical trainers are kind of a combination of rowing, cross country skiing, and bicycling. You move all major muscle groups in a very fluid, low impact way. A high quality elliptical trainer is very solid, (No jerky motions) quiet, and usually comes with a display that will let you know the amount of time you have been riding, calories burned, mileage, etc.

I prefer using an elliptical trainer because of the full body workout plus the fact I can watch TV, listen to music, or even read while I am riding. The sound of a high quality elliptical trainer will not disturb others in your home. The fact that your whole body is involved makes it less likely that you will get bored or experience discomfort while on your elliptical machine. It is easy to track progress and easy to fit into your schedule. Even the busiest people I know watch at least a half hour of TV per day, now you can combine your exercise, weight loss routine with your TV time!

When it comes to elliptical trainers – Quality Counts! Do not get a loose, squeaky, cheap variety; it will end up being a clothes hanger in your family room! Cheap elliptical trainers do not provide a fluid motion and can sometimes feel jerky. A high quality elliptical machine will have a "natural" feel while you are riding. High quality elliptical trainers can be found at reputable web sites and some exercise equipment stores, but I have yet to find one I liked at a department store. Look for trial periods, satisfaction guarantees, and warranties.

How can you incorporate riding an elliptical machine into your weight loss program? Let me give you a few suggestions but remember to check with your doctor and realize your limits. First off theoretically speaking, 3500 calories represents one pound of fat. If you eat 3500 more calories than your body needs it will be stored as a pound of fat, if you consume 3500 less calories than your body needs it will burn 1 pound of stored energy resulting in fat loss. Perhaps you are saying: "Wait a minute! Why are you talking about consuming fewer calories? I thought this was an article about elliptical machines and weight loss!" The key here is; "consuming fewer calories than your body needs". Rather than focusing on how to consume fewer calories we are going to think of our elliptical workouts as a way to cause our bodies to need more calories.

Let's say you are someone who is relatively stable in your consumes/needs bank; You are consuming a few more calories than you are burning and perhaps have been slowly gaining weight over the years. Set a goal to eat as you normally do and ride the elliptical trainer for 3500 calories over a week's time. Do this consistently week after week and you will achieve weight loss.

Let's say you are someone who is not so stable in your consumes/needs bank. You are consuming many more calories than you are burning. If this is the case you will obviously need to make some better food decisions. Read some of our other articles for ideas on how to cut some calories from your diet. Start with a goal to ride the elliptical machine for 3500 calories per week and soon you will be on the positive side of the consumes/needs bank and you will start to drop those pounds.

Ride your elliptical trainer consistently and do your best to make it a ritual that you enjoy. Listen to music, watch TV, read…make it something you look forward to every day. The rewards will be a healthier body, less fat, and a better feeling you.

I wish for you the best of health!

Why Weight? Effective Weight Loss Programs Are Here!

Why Weight? Effective Weight Loss Programs Are Here!

by Larry Denton

There are two different types of weight-loss programs available--clinical and non-clinical. Knowing what a good program will offer and what to watch out for may help you choose a weight-loss plan that will be successful for you.

A non-clinical program may be commercially operated, such as a privately owned weight-loss chain. You can follow a non-clinical program on your own by using a counselor, guide book, website, or weight-loss product. You can also join others in a support group, worksite program, or community-based projects. Non-clinical weight-loss programs may require you to buy and use the program's foods or supplements.

A safe and effective non-clinical program will offer books, pamphlets, and websites that are written or reviewed by a licensed health professional such as a medical doctor (M.D.) or registered dietician (R.D.). It should provide you with balanced information about following a healthy eating plan and instruct you about getting regular physical activity. Leaders or counselors in such programs should show you their training credentials, since they may not be licensed health professionals.

A few cautions about non-clinical weight loss programs. If a program requires you to buy packaged meals, find out how much the meals will cost--they may be beyond your budget. Also, by eating the prepackaged meals, you do not learn the food selection and cooking skills you will need to maintain weight loss over the long term. Avoid any diet plan that suggests you eat a certain formula food, or combination of foods for "fast and easy" weight loss. Some of these diets work in the short term because they are low in calories, but they may not provide all the nutrients and minerals your body needs and they do NOT teach healthy eating habits.

Avoid any program that does not include a physical activity plan. To lose weight and keep it off effectively, you must use more calories than you consume. And finally, talk to your health care provider before using any weight loss product, such as a supplement, herb, or over-the-counter medication.

Clinical weight-loss programs are services that are provided in a health-care setting, such as a hospital or clinic. One or more licensed health care professionals, such as doctors, nurses, dietitians, and/or psychologists, provide care and treatment suggestions.

Clinical programs may offer services such as nutrition education, physical activity, and behavior change therapy. Some programs offer prescription weight-loss drugs or gastrointestinal surgery. If your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or more, you may consider using prescription weight-loss drugs. These drugs should be used as part of an overall program that includes long-term changes in eating and physical activity habits. Only a licensed health care provider can prescribe these drugs.

If your BMI is 35 or more and you have weight-related health problems such as diabetes or heart disease, you may consider gastrointestinal surgery (also known as bariatric surgery). Most patients lose weight quickly, and many keep off most of their weight with a healthy eating plan and regular physical activity. However, as with most surgeries, there are risks. Bariatric surgery may reduce the amount of vitamins and minerals your body can absorb and may cause gallstones.

It is never easy to change lifelong habits, especially eating and physical activity behavior. But, it CAN be done. The results will be a happier, healthier, more confident and satisfied you!

Weight Loss: N Y Millionaire Weight Loss “Secret” Revealed

Weight Loss: N Y Millionaire Weight Loss "Secret" Revealed

By I-key Benney

It is a fact that about 70% Americans are overweight. There may be genetic, social and psychological factors involved in this problem.

Hi, my name is I-key. All my life, I have always tried to eat well. I constantly exercised and my weight remained stable for about 15 yrs.

I believe that good health is one the greatest assets one can have.

Read on and discover my simple weight loss secret that may inspire you.

My weight problem began 3 yrs ago, when I stopped exercising.

The reason was because I discovered a little known millionaire "SECRET", Mscsrrr Millionaire Cash system. (That enables one to turn his computer into a home personal "Atm Machine" that generates $1,500+ weekly, without any large investment hard work or special training)

After I tested it and was shocked to make more money in a day than I make at my job in a month, I was hooked.

But it has a drawback, because if not done properly, it can make you lose all your money.

For this reason, I decided to lock myself up in my office to work on it day and night in order to figure out how to make this secret money making system safe and risk free for the average person to do. (for more details, please go to: http://www.home-based-business-opportunity-center.com).

For this reason, I was not able to do any physical exercise and my weight ballooned.

One day, I went out, and suddenly I started having pains in my leg and had difficulty walking. I didn't know how overweight I had become, until I took a photo of myself.

Holy mackerel, I nearly had a heart attack when I saw my photo, because I couldn't believe the person in the photo was me! I was about 100 pounds overweight and looked like an elephant!

I was so horrified by my picture that I rushed into a nearby Chinese store and asked them if they had any herbal tea that can help me shed a lot of weight quickly. I bought a cup and immediately started drinking it. In 2 weeks, I didn't lose any weight, instead I started having nervousness and twitching all over my body.

I knew right away the cause was the herbal tea and stopped drinking it. In a few days the nervousness went away.

Then I got on the internet and searched for weight loss diet. I was stunned by the search result of hundreds of different kinds of weight loss diets out there: Atkins, Jenny Craig, Richard Simmons, Dr. Phil, Weight Watchers, Low carb diets, high carb diets, high protein diets, Scarsdale diet, vegetarian diets, macrobiotic diets and many others.

Weight loss and nutrition are multi-billion dollar growth industries.

There are thousands of mlm and network companies out there hawking assorted diet pills, weight loss plans and programs, vitamins and nutraceuticals.

When I went to the bookstore, I was overwhelmed to see many weight loss and diet programs. I saw so many books on nutrition, aerobic exercise, home gym equipment.

On the TV, I saw Winfrey Oprah interview her guests about weight loss problems and listened to Dr. Phil talk about discipline and self control and saw Pilates' infomercial, Bally's gym ads, Lucille Robert Ads, Suzanne Summer ads for home exercise equipments.

I read in the magazines how most diet pills are dangerous especially those that contain ephedra (ephedrine) which has since lead to many deaths.

I was horrified to read about some people resorting to surgery where their stomach or intestines are stapled or reduced in an effort to make them eat less and lose weight. Two celebrities, Carnie Wilson and Al Roker have successfully done this.

Two days ago, I heard Kevin Trudeau (of mega –memory program fame) speak on little known natural remedies that cure all the major ailments most people suffer from.

He revealed that most food processors and companies are now adding growth hormones to food substances and this may be another cause for overweight problem, food addiction and some of diseases we suffer.

The problem is that with this sea of information, diet and weight loss pills, diet and weight loss programs, recipes, vitamins, exercise regimens, books and tapes, it is not easy for an average overweight person to know where to begin. How does one know which weight loss and diet pill, weight loss program, or diet and exercise program is good for him? I didn't!

However, my natural instinct told me that losing weight can be achieved easily by understanding the simple dynamics of how the average human body works.

If one eats less but does more physical exercise, one will lose weight.

But this is not always easy to do, because most people (like me) lack self-control and discipline regarding eating food. Also, most people unconsciously over eat food as a way to escape from confronting various emotional, psychological and social problems afflicting them.

It is the above insight that finally helped me to develop a simple weight loss plan and exercise regimen that helped me to lose 60 pounds in 6 weeks.

I began to eat only once in 3 days. And before eating any heavy food, I will first eat salads and fruits and drink a glass of warm milk. And instead of drinking only sodas, I also started drinking various juices. Twice or thrice in the week, at 6 am in the morning, I got up and jogged about 1-2 miles to get my blood circulatory system up and running.

For obvious reasons, I have started avoiding McDonalds (their fries, Big Mac) Wendy's, Subway, and Burger King restaurants and Taco Bell, with their burritos, tacos, and gorditas.

Once in a while I go out to Olive Garden and Applebees restaurants to dine with my friends.

During the new year, my plan is to hire a dietician to help me plan better meals. I also plan to get a personal weight training expert and start weight training.

My immediate goal is to lose another 60 Ibs within the next 2 months and to maintain my weight at 160 pounds by rigorously following my weight loss plan.

Please feel free to print this article, publish it anywhere or e-mail it to your friends and colleagues.

Weight Loss Diets with Negative Calorie Foods

Weight Loss Diets with Negative Calorie Foods

By P. Mehta

Negative calorie foods are said to use more calories to digest than the calorie content of the foods themselves, resulting in a negative calorie balance. It is therefore natural to consider a diet containing these foods for weight loss.

A diet is a combination of a balanced selection of foods designed for medical or nutritional reasons. A good diet should include all major food groups. The weight loss diets (with or without negative calorie foods) are made to reduce body fat and weight. Some of the popular weight loss diets are: Atkin's diet, cabbage soup diet, grapefruit diet, Hollywood diet, negative calorie foods diet, Pritikin diet, the South beach diet and the zone diet.

Most of the weight loss diets promote to eat a particular food group and restrict other food groups. Such diets may show temporary results. If you follow these restricted diets for a long time, you may develop some health problems at later stage as these diets do not contain all the necessary nutrients needed for your body.

The secret to losing weight is to eat and drink the right kind of foods until you are satisfied. Skipping of meals is not the answer for weight loss, it can rather deteriorate your health. A healthy weight loss diet plan should include vegetables, fruits, grains, lentils and beans in your diet. Following is a sample daily diet plan that is good for keeping healthy weight and good health, irrespective of whether you follow a diet plan with negative calorie foods or not.

- Skim milk and skim yogurt.
- Salads or boiled vegetables or vegetable soup as starter.
- Whole-wheat bread/tortila, whole grain cereal and rice.
- Whole grains like kidney beans, chick peas and lentils.
- Lightly cooked green vegetables.
- Any dessert with minimum sugar.
- Lean variety of meat (it is better to avoid).
- The dinner should be light. If you had bread for lunch then have rice for dinner.

Include as much negative calorie foods as possible in the above diet plan. If you are meat eater, choose from a lean variety and restrict to one serving in a day.

A diet with negative calorie foods as main ingredients can include foods that are loaded with carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibers necessary for keeping you fit. The diet with negative calorie foods can be tailored for fast or gradual weight loss. The fast weight loss diet that can lower the weight up to two pounds per day, is not recommended for long term. The gradual weight loss diet can reduce one pound in a week and can be followed until desired weight is achieved. The diet can be made according to ones needs. The negative calorie foods will not give you much benefit if you are eating foods loaded with fats and sugars. If you eat a serving of potato fries, don't think that you can reduce the calories gained from fries by simply eating some negative calorie celery.

Using Weight Loss Supplements To Reach Your Weight Loss Goals

Using Weight Loss Supplements To Reach Your Weight Loss Goals

By Bill Herren

Supplement is a word defined by Webster as such: Something added to complete a thing or to make up for a deficiency. Even so; some weight loss supplement companies market their products as magic pills and some consumers think of them as such.

I believe weight loss supplements can be beneficial if we learn to look past the hype and use them in addition to improved eating habits as well as increased physical activity.

Know what you want out of your weight loss supplement:
Are you looking for decreased appetite, carb blocking ability or increased metabolism? What is the manufacturer promising? What are the active ingredients and what studies and dosages were done on them?

Look for reviews and testimonials:
This is something I almost did not want to mention because reviews and testimonials can be very conflicting. Reading weight loss supplement reviews and testimonials is going to require you to think for yourself and determine if the review or testimonial makes a valid point or not. I recently read a review for a weight loss product that said something to this effect: "I did not like this product; I continued to eat the way I always do and actually gained weight on this product." My interpretation of this is that the person probably did not carefully monitor what they were eating. They were gaining weight before "eating what they normally eat" and were expecting this pill to magically cause them to lose weight. On the other hand, a weight loss testimonial that says "I eat anything I want and am still losing weight!" is equally suspicious to me. Weight loss product testimonials and reviews can be helpful in your decision if you weed through the hype and incomplete information. Look for clues such as: Did this product decrease the customers' appetite? Did the customer experience more energy? Was the reviewer jittery?

Is it too good to be true?
We have a tendency to believe what we want to believe. But when it comes to weight loss supplements we have to be honest with our self. Are the claims exaggerated? Is the company telling us we do not need to change our lifestyle? Does it appear the company wants us to lead a healthy lifestyle or does the company want to sell millions of pills? Remember weight loss supplements are going to help you reach your goals, not carry you to the completion of your weight loss goals.

Best seller does not always mean the best product.
I was a distributor for a branch of a very reputable supplement company and attended a convention they sponsored. The speaker was talking about making claims when trying to sell product and how they did not want us making any claims that have not been backed by science. Someone asked the question about other companies and why they could make outlandish weight loss claims and experience such great sales while we could only state scientific fact. The speaker acknowledge the fact that these companies would sell millions of dollars worth of product but they would not earn repeat customers and more than likely would not even exist in the long run. Ask yourself if the product you are interested in is a best seller because of hype or because the company is reputable and has a quality weight loss product.

Has the company been around for a while?
While the fact that a company is new does not mean it is low quality, a company that has been around for years usually has happy customers.

Read the directions and warnings very carefully.
I knew a lady that was taking a Chitosan product and getting sick. She asked me about it and I quickly asked her if she was allergic to shellfish-She was. Fortunately for her it was only a mild allergen and she did not suffer seriously. It was clearly stated on the label; "Do not take if you are allergic to shellfish." Also don't have the mentality that if one pill is good then two must be better. Natural weight loss products can be very powerful and should be treated with respect.

Take a break from time to time.
Occasionally take a break from your weight loss supplement regimen especially if you are using a weight loss product that contains a stimulant such as caffeine or other powerful herbs. I even do this with my multi-vitamin. I just believe it is a good idea to give your body a break from time to time.

Conclusion:
I believe weight loss supplements can help you reach your weight loss goals, I also believe you can reach your weight loss goals without weight loss supplements, however I have always been the type of person that wanted every edge I can get. So if you are like me, and you decide to use weight loss supplements, think of your weight loss goal as a three legged table. One leg represents healthy eating, one leg represents activity, and the other leg represents your weight loss supplementation. Remove any one leg and the table will fall. Rely on only one leg and you will not reach your weight loss goal. Shop carefully, have realistic expectations, follow safety guidelines and reach your weight loss goal!

I wish for you the best of health!

Top 10 Points of Encouragement for Weight Loss

Top 10 Points of Encouragement for Weight Loss

By Greg Landry, M.S.

On the road to weight loss, fitness, and health, you can easily become discouraged. In fact, discouragement is what leads many people to give-up when they may have been near a point of significant progress and encouragement in their program.

I've put together my "top 10" points of encouragement to help keep your spirits high on your road to weight loss, fitness, and health..

1. It does get better - and often very quickly! Many people that are significantly overweight or that have been sedentary for a long time, find any activity, even walking a few hundred feet, to be very difficult and uncomfortable. Be encouraged, many physiological changes happen very quickly once you start moving. Walking, for example, starts getting easier and more comfortable within a couple of weeks. Keep moving - every day will be a little better! Be encouraged!

2. I love this lady's story. It just makes you want to cheer for her while sitting at your computer. Margie from Madison, Wisconsin weighed 296 pounds when she started walking in her neighborhood. She says she started by walking about half a block twice a day and that it was incredibly difficult at first. After the second day she had decided to quit but a neighbor encouraged her to continue. Every day she walked the same route but added a little distance each week. She says there were many days when she wanted to quit, but she wanted very badly to lose weight and be healthy. After several months the people in her neighborhood started noticing her consistency and her progress and started giving her compliments and words of encouragement. She said that after a few months of walking, it went from painful to enjoyable.

About ten months into her walking program, she began her morning walk as usual, but she noticed people out in their yards. As she passed each yard they were clapping and cheering for her, "go Margie", "we're proud of you Margie", "congratulations Margie!" She said tears of happiness flowed through her entire walk that morning as over a hundred people cheered her on all along her route! Be encouraged!

3. The visible signs of progress in a weight loss program are often very slow to come. Healthy weight loss takes time, but that can be very discouraging. Be encouraged to know that for each day that you exercise and eat healthy foods in moderate quantities, you have made progress. It might not be measurable that day, but you have made progress and it will be measurable over a period of weeks and months. Be encouraged!

4. Katherine was 43 years-old and had been sedentary for 20 years. The scale had not changed in those 20 years - she still weighed 136 pounds, but she knew she had lost muscle and gained fat. Her waist was bigger and she couldn't fit into the same size clothes that she did 20 years earlier. What bothered her most was that she was always tired and never had energy. She decided to start walking and weight training but quit after a week. She said, "it's too uncomfortable, I can't keep doing this." I encouraged her to continue and told her that it would get better.

She "quit" three times during the next two weeks. We talked frequently.Six weeks later she started to notice some muscle tone and she noticed that her endurance and energy level had increased dramatically. She said, "I'm very encouraged!" Eight months later she had gained two pounds on the scale but lost three inches in her waist - and she walked a marathon! Yeeeeeeesss! Be encouraged!

5. The whole idea behind physical training is that you push your body to do a little more than it's comfortable with and it responds by making physical and physiological changes. These changes make you capable of doing a little more with less discomfort. Be encouraged!

6. Gerald in New Orleans, Louisiana lost 85 pounds after he started walking and weight training. Once he had lost the weight, he decided to do something that would allow him to fully appreciate his weight loss. For an entire day, he carried around a sack that contained 85 pounds of metal weights.Getting around during that day was a struggle and very tiring. At the end of the day he was exhausted! Life without the weight is great! Be encouraged!

7. Keep records of your progress. Every day write down the positive changes you've noticed and also keep a record of the exercise you do every day. Write down what you did, how long you did it, and any thoughts about your exercise that day. Keep a running total of your minutes. You can look back at what you've done with a great sense of accomplishment and you'll be motivated to do more. Be encouraged!

8. Daily exercise will change your life! I believe God designed humans to be active on a daily basis. Why? because when you are, lots of good things happen..

- you are healthier

- you feel better and have more energy

- you are less likely to develop cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc.

- you sleep better

- you have a better outlook on life

- your relationships with people are enhanced

- your skin looks healthier

- you are sick less often

- your immune system is stronger

- you lose fat

- you gain toned, lean muscle

- you look healthier

Be encouraged!

9. Betty Jo in Tuscaloosa, Alabama wrote to me.. "Greg, After 24 years of being married to a grouchy, pessimistic man who didn't enjoy life, I saw all that change over a period of about a year. Harold was the classic 70 pound overweight couch potato when he was scared into exercising and healthier eating habits by the death of his 46 year-old friend."

Harold's doctor recommended that he start walking every morning and after a couple of weeks Harold told Betty Jo that he wanted to start eating better. Harold really took-off with this "health thing" and lost 72 pounds and become a new man - inside and out. In Betty Jo's words, "I have a new husband. He walks for an hour every morning and he is a joy to be around. His enthusiasm for life makes our marriage fun." Be encouraged!

10. Progress and improvement generate encouragement. YOU can progress and improve and be encouraged to do more. Tomorrow morning, put on your walking shoes and take a walk, even if it's just a few minutes. The next day, do it again - progress and improve. Be encouraged!

Tips for Weight Loss

 Tips for Weight Loss

By P. Mehta

For a healthy body, it is very important to have ideal body weight. Try to reduce your weight gradually. If you lose weight quickly, you will gain it back fast and sometimes even more! Quick weight loss is not the answer to obesity.

Given below are some tips for weightwatchers. You will lose weight gradually and become fit over a period of time.

Tips for Weight Loss

  • Reduce fat: Fats have more than twice the calories than protein or carbohydrate! Our body converts excess dietary fat to body fat.
  • Limit sugar & alcohol: Foods with a lot of added sugar and alcoholic drinks are just empty calories.
  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
  • Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, & whole grains.
  • Eat slowly: You eat more if you eat fast, as it takes about 15 minutes for our brain to get the message from our stomach that we have eaten enough.
  • Include a low fat protein-rich food like tofu, beans, eggs, and low fat milk, yogurt or cottage cheese with every meal.
  • No prepackaged foods, powders, or bars will make you slim.
